Kathmandu. The flood in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa district on Wednesday has caused a huge loss of life and property in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts. The government is engaged in search, rescue, relief and rehabilitation with high priority. In such a difficult situation, the government has started receiving support from various organizations and individuals, both at home and abroad.
So far, some countries, individuals and organizations have already provided assistance, while some have already announced the amount as a commitment to help. According to Amrit Lamsal, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, so far the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has committed five million US dollars for budgetary support. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has pledged to provide Rs 189 TAG_OPEN_div_80.622 million (USD 1.2 million) immediately for the search, rescue and rehabilitation of the people affected by the severe floods. The IFRC has also urged the Red Cross volunteers to continue their efforts in the disaster response as they have been actively engaged in search, rescue and relief distribution in the affected areas.
Jagan Chapagain, Secretary-General of IFRC, said that financial assistance has been provided to strengthen the disaster response to the Bhotekoshi floods and provide immediate humanitarian assistance. Out of this, Oxfam has provided 200 packets of sanitation materials and 1,000 aqua tablets for water purification. Oxfam has said that it will provide water, sanitation and hygiene assistance in Rasuwa, Dhading and Nuwakot. Mercy Corps has said that it has kept 200 non-food relief materials in stock for Nuwakot. The organization will also work in the supply of drinking water and sanitation, mental health and psychosocial support along with non-food items. The Prime Minister’TAG_OPEN_div_49 s Relief Fund, launched by the government for the flood-affected people and areas of Rasuwa, is currently being collected from various sectors. According to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Rs 4.38 billion has been deposited in the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund as of Friday night. This amount is deposited in the accounts of nine commercial banks. Similarly, two more banks, Himalayan and Laxmi, have deposited 6,80,618 US dollars (about Rs 10.38 crore).
