Kathmandu. The devastating floods that occurred in Bhotekoshi of Rasuwa district on August 10 have caused major damage in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Makwanpur and Chitwan districts.
This flood has caused an equal amount of loss of life and property. The banking sector was also not untouched by this flood. The banking sector has also suffered a lot of physical and human losses.
Anil Sharma, chief executive officer (CEO) of Nepal Bankers’ Association (NBA), said that deposits of commercial banks worth Rs 4.5 billion have been affected and loans worth Rs 2.5 billion have been affected due to floods and inundation in the area.
According to him, the data of loans disbursed from the bank branches in the affected areas is initially around Rs 2.5 billion. However, he said that the details of the investment made by the banks in the infrastructure sector including hydropower projects are yet to be collected.
“The data on how much investment the banks had in hydropower is yet to come. The details of the investment made in hotels, house construction and other sectors are also being collected,” Sharma said. He said that more details about the number of lockers of banks in the affected areas and the condition of the customers affected by them are yet to come.
According to Sharma, the number of depositors in the bank’s branches in the affected areas is 78,200 and the number of customers taking loans is 2,125. The impact on the banking business due to floods and inundation will also be seen in the upcoming first quarter financial statement.
There are a total of 17 branches of various commercial banks in the affected areas. Among them, branches of Agriculture Development Bank, Citizens Bank, Global IME Bank, Himalayan Bank, Laxmi Sunrise Bank, Machhapuchchhre Bank, Nabil Bank and NIC Asia Bank have been affected.
3 branches of NIC Asia Bank, 3 branches of Nepal Investment Mega Bank, 2 branches of Prabhu Bank and one branch each of NMB Bank and Sanima Bank have been affected. The exact extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained as details of additional investments, deposits, loans and other assets of the banks are being collected in the affected branches and areas.
As many as 27 employees of various banks have not come into contact with them so far. Similarly, five employees of Timure branch of Machhapuchchhre Bank, 1 employee of Timure branch of Global IME Bank and seven employees of Nepal Investment Mega Bank are still missing.
Similarly, 5 employees of Prabhu Bank, 4 employees of NMB Bank (3 employees and 1 security guard), 2 employees of Sanima Bank, 2 employees of Laxmi Sunrise Bank and 1 employee of Himalayan Bank are out of contact so far.
Meanwhile, 12 employees working at different branches of Nepal Investment Mega Bank have been injured. An employee working at the Trishuli branch of Agriculture Development Bank has also been injured.
How many deposits and loans of which bank?
The Trishuli branch of Agriculture Development Bank has been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 59,52,40,882 in 9,136 deposit accounts. The branch has disbursed loans worth Rs 1,37,74,096 through 1,356 loan accounts. There were 14 employees working in the branch operating in its own building, out of which one person was injured. Rs. 1,71,28,317.26 in the vault and Rs. 42 lakh in cash. The bank has been able to withdraw the amount from the vault.
The Devighat branch of Citizens Bank has also been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 38,39,15,915 in 5,014 deposit accounts. There is a loan of Rs 8,88,63,277 in 78 loan accounts. The bank said that there are 8 employees in the branch and the employees are safe. There was Rs 1,09,07,521 in the vault and Rs 44,74,535 in the counter.
The Timure branch of Global IME Bank has been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 24,46,79,113 in 3,335 deposit accounts. There is a loan of Rs 1,01,30,924 in 21 loan accounts. Out of five employees, four are safe and one is missing. In the vault. There was Rs 69,04,943 in cash.
The Betrawati branch of Himalayan Bank has been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 76,65,69,071 in 14,442 deposit accounts. The bank has a loan of Rs 29,72,97,037 in 121 loan accounts. According to the bank, one of the nine employees has gone missing. The bank had Rs 2,56,99,08.74 in its vault and Rs 30,96,660 in its counter.
The Timure branch of Laxmi Sunrise Bank was completely damaged. The branch had deposits of Rs 5,82,82,976 in 552 deposit accounts and Rs 2,41,02,713 in 29 loan accounts. Out of the six employees, four are safe while two employees appointed from external sources are missing. There was Rs 75,18,161 in cash in the vault.
The Timure branch of Machhapuchchhre Bank was also completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 6,98,80,778 in 685 deposit accounts and Rs 83,95,447 in 6 loan accounts. Five of the six employees are missing. There was Rs 45,08,854 in cash in the vault.
The Timure branch of Nabil Bank has been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 5,52,75,648 in 535 deposit accounts. There is no loan account or money. All the five employees are safe. There was Rs 30,62,365 in cash in the vault.
The Betrawati branch of NIC Asia Bank has been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 25,60,08,279 in 5,781 deposit accounts. The 51 loan accounts have a loan of Rs 6,95,17,350. All the five employees are safe. There was Rs 1,20,68,847 in cash in the vault.
The Syafrubesi branch of NIC Asia Bank has been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 28,99,08,092 in 5,322 deposit accounts. There are loans of Rs 13,73,21,650 in 79 loan accounts. All five employees are safe. There was Rs 6,027,279 in cash in the vault.
The Trishuli branch of NIC Asia Bank has been seriously damaged. The branch has a deposit of Rs 13,27,22,538 in 2,268 deposit accounts and Rs 13,47,13,492 in 70 loan accounts. All the six employees are safe. The vault had Rs 69,96,138 in cash.
Similarly, the Timure branch of Nepal Investment Mega Bank has been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 27,25,13,822 in 6,430 deposit accounts and Rs 5,93,36,857 in 37 loan accounts. One of the seven employees is missing. There was Rs 55,11,78.45 in cash in the vault.
The Syafrubesi branch of Nepal Investment Mega Bank has been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 59,39,96,840 in 13,652 deposit accounts. The bank has a loan of Rs 3,48,95,108 in 44 loan accounts. Five of the eight employees are missing. The bank had Rs 2,20,29,09,09 cash in its vault.
The Mailung expansion counter of Nepal Investment Mega Bank has also been completely damaged. Since the counter is under the Timure branch, there are no separate details of deposits and loans. Out of the five employees, three are safe, one is injured and one is missing. The vault contained Rs 79,32,125 in cash.
The Timure branch of NMB Bank has been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 9,43,19,351 in 3,975 deposit accounts and Rs 51,54,707 in 37 loan accounts. Four of the five employees of the bank are missing. There was Rs 73,41,587.83 in cash in the vault.
The Timure branch of Prabhu Bank has been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 7,98,02,779 in 649 deposit accounts and Rs 8,032,626 in six loan accounts. Of the seven employees, three are safe, two are injured and two are missing. The bank has Rs 76,26,294.12 in cash.
Prabhu Bank’s Safrubesi branch was also completely damaged. The branch had Rs 36,35,88,434 in 4,280 deposit accounts and Rs 8,87,24,896 in 91 loan accounts. Out of the eight employees, two are missing. The vault had Rs 1,78,69,147.30.
The Timure branch of Sanima Bank has been completely damaged. The branch has deposits of Rs 17,51,05,910 in 2,148 deposit accounts and Rs 8,41,97,289 in 99 loan accounts. Out of the six employees, four are safe and two are missing. The bank had Rs 33,26,698 in cash.
