Bhotekoshi floods: Kush’s body cremated at Aryaghat

The family members of the disappeared people performed a mass cremation by making a symbol of Kush’s body as per Hindu tradition.

After a long time of the floods, the family members made a symbol of the body from Kush for the last rites. Today, a mass cremation was done at Aryaghat in Pashupatinath with the symbol of dozens of Kush’s bodies.

A large crowd gathered at Aryaghat as dozens of family members gathered at once. The last few days have been painful for the family members who lost their loved ones in the floods. According to Anish Sangat, an employee of the postmortem registration office at Pashupati, mass cremation of at least one hundred bodies made of kush symbols was performed at Aryaghat today.

} “We do not keep a separate record of the bodies of Kush, but today the bodies of at least one hundred Prateeks were burnt,” he said. The family members said that they were forced to perform the last rites after a long time of the disappearance of their relatives in the floods, but they did not get any information during the search. The family, who had been waiting day and night in the hope of returning their relatives, finally tried to calm their minds by completing the religious rituals.

According to Babin Rijal of Nuwakot, his mother and father Nath Rijal and Binita Rijal have gone missing in the floods. He said that the last rites of the dead bodies were made from kush at Pashupati Aryaghat today as the condition of their father and mother could not be traced even after a long time of being swept away by the floods.TAG_OPEN_div_32

“My mother and father have gone missing due to the floods. Now that the hope of finding him alive is gone, today we have made the body of Kush and cremated him at Pashupati,” he said. After the body of the missing was not found, the family members have taken the last rites as per the religious rituals as a last tribute to the relatives amidst the pain. Relatives were overwhelmed when the symbolic bodies made of Kush were burnt at Aryaghat.

The sudden flood in the Bhotekoshi River on August 23 had caused a huge loss of life and material in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and surrounding areas. A large number of people have gone missing after the floods and search and rescue operations are underway in different places.

} Despite the search for the missing, some families have started giving up hope of the survival of their relatives after there was no contact or condition for a long time. After this, they started attending the funeral by making a symbolic corpse from Kush as per Hindu tradition.

Today’s mass funeral at Aryaghat has also reflected the depth of human suffering caused by the Bhotekoshi floods. The family members, who could not even see the actual bodies of their relatives, performed the religious rites by paying last respects to the symbolic body.
