Kathmandu. At least 5 people were killed and 5 others injured when an Amazon cargo plane crashed off the runway at Miami International Airport in the United States on Sunday.
The plane, which arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, departed the runway while landing at around 2 p.m. local time. The plane then landed on a road used by employees working in warehouses and other businesses around the airport.
According to Miami-Dade County officials, 5 people were killed, 3 were seriously injured and 2 others were seriously injured in the crash. It was not immediately clear if the driver and co-driver of the plane were alive. It was also not clear if all of the victims were in the vehicle or elsewhere.
After the crash, thick black smoke from the plane spread towards the sky. According to Rescue Chief Ray Jadallah, the driver and co-pilot were trapped in the front of the plane and some people were trapped inside the vehicle. Rescuers also pulled a person out from under the vehicle.
Flight services at Miami Airport were disrupted for most of the afternoon due to the crash. About 200 emergency rescuers were at the scene.
There was a major fire on the plane. The fire was brought under control by the special fire brigade team of the airport using foam. Officials said that fuel leakage was still happening from the aircraft a few hours after the accident.
The plane came to a stop near two large cargo trucks on the side of the road. Despite the fire, most of the plane’s structures were found to be safe.
The cause of the accident was not immediately known. It is also not clear whether weather conditions played a role in the crash. According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms and wind gusts of up to 48 kilometers per hour were recorded in the area at the time of the accident.
The concerned authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
