Kathmandu. U.S.-Iran tensions have escalated after Iran attacked ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, including the Gulf of Oman and parts of the Arabian Sea, in restricted areas. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Wednesday that it had taken action against two U.S. ships, eight oil tankers and 10 non-compliant vessels.

Hossein Mohebi, a spokesman for the Guards, said that ships that enter the restricted area without coordination will be subject to action. Iran has made it mandatory for ships using the Strait of Hormuz to obtain a permit and pay a transit fee.

Meanwhile, the price of oil has risen above $100 per barrel. Brent crude oil closed at $101.21 on Wednesday. The Strait of Hormuz normally transports about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.

Iran also said it attacked a U.S. military base in Jordan in retaliation for the destruction of five Iranian oil tankers. Jordan said it had fired 18 missiles on its territory. Iran has called the U.S. action a threat to regional and international peace, calling the attack on military installations self-defense.

US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that the war will end after the November midterm elections. But the Wall Street Journal quoted US officials as saying that his senior advisers have warned that the war could continue for the remaining two years of Trump’s term.

Meanwhile, the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency voted 23-3 in favor of sending Iran’s nuclear issue to the UN Security Council. Russia, China and Niger voted against it. Iran has said that the resolution was passed under US pressure and that there is no basis for it.

International movement through the Strait of Hormuz has come to a standstill since the US-Israel invasion of Iran in February. There are concerns that the closure of the strait could have a serious impact on global energy supplies.
