. State-backed groups linked to countries such as China and Iran are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor and spy on ethnic minorities, dissidents and dissidents abroad, according to AI company Anthropic.
Anthropic has detected and disrupted several state-sponsored surveillance campaigns from China, Iran and West Africa from January to July this year. According to the report, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy communities, some minority communities, and opponents of the Iranian government abroad have been the targets of such surveillance campaigns.
In one case, an Iranian group developed a method to detect people’s identities through social media, while a contractor working for Mali’s national security officer developed software to help collect intelligence using Anthropic’s AI model ‘Cloud’. Anthropic also said it had halted attempts to use AI in weapons design, suspected biological research and dating fraud.
The company has accused Chinese AI companies Moonshot and DeepSick of secretly using the cloud to answer their users’ questions and improving their AI models from the data they obtained. The company claims that Moonshot sent about 300,000 customer requests to Anthropic through 5,380 fraudulent accounts in 10 days.TAG_OPEN_div_10
