Lamjung. The water level in the Marsyangdi River has increased due to incessant rains.

According to the Marsyangdi Water Measurement Center at Bhakundebesi, the water level of the river is currently around 8.24 meters. The warning level of 10 meters at this center is considered as the warning level. The center said that the river has crossed the warning level time and again in the last few days due to the increase in the water flow. Sirens have been sounded when the water level in the Marsyangdi River rises.

Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Khanal said the rising water level in the Marsyangdi River has increased time and again, which has especially increased the risk to the human settlements adjacent to the rivers and rivulets.

He said that the water level has increased from the sirens installed by the hydropower projects in various places around the river. He said that it is not possible to know what will happen at the time as the rain has been continuing lately. He said that the people have been urged to take precaution as the risk may increase in the settlements around the river and rivulets due to incessant rain.

Earlier, the flood in 2078 BS had caused damage to the areas around the Marsyangdi River. The flood had also damaged physical infrastructures including the Lamjung-Manang road.

Landslide blocks Besisahar-Chame road

The only road linking Lamjung to Manang has been obstructed due to landslides triggered by incessant rains. According to the District Police Office, Lamjung, the road has been obstructed after a landslide occurred at Kharkhare cliff in Besisahar Municipality-6 of Lamjung district this morning.

According to Gyanendra Bahadur Chhetri, information officer of the District Police Office, the road was disrupted due to landslides and falling of stones and mud from the upper part of the road this morning. He said that a police team under the command of Assistant Head Constable Ram Kumar Shrestha from Police Post Khudi has been deployed to the incident site after receiving information about the road obstruction.

Information Officer Chhetri said that efforts are being made to remove the landslide and bring the road into operation. Kharkhare cliff is about three kilometers west of the police post Khudi. Landslides occur frequently at Kharkhare cliff during the rainy season.

Earlier, the road was blocked due to landslides. Police said that the risk of landslides is still there as it is raining and caution should be taken while opening the road.
