KATHMANDU: US President Donald Trump is expected to highlight his administration’s war achievements and peacekeeping efforts in his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.

Trump is expected to justify war with Iran, as well as his efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and his efforts to include more Arab countries in the Abraham Accords with Israel.

He is also expected to present his case on the disruption caused by the war in the Strait of Hormuz and the economic damage caused by it.

Daniel Forti of the International Crisis Group said Trump could present himself as both a peacemaker and a supporter of military action. He is also expected to repeat his criticism of the United Nations at the General Assembly.

Last year, Trump expressed dissatisfaction that the escalator had stopped while he was using it at the United Nations headquarters and that there was a problem with the teleprompter. U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the escalators had been checked and a new system of teleprompters had been installed for the U.S. delegation.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, Trump met with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Japanese Prime Minister Sanne Takaichi and Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodriguez. The General Assembly’s high-level meeting will discuss global security and economic challenges, including war and artificial intelligence.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva addressed Trump before Trump. Lula, who is seeking re-election, said he would urge Trump not to interfere in Brazil’s upcoming elections. The General Assembly’s high-level debate is scheduled to be held in New York from September 22 to 28.
