Kathmandu. U.S. President Donald Trump, in his first meeting with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, said the relationship between the two countries is good, but criticized Britain’s plan to hand over sovereignty over the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean to Mauritius.

Trade, the Falkland Islands, Iran and Ukraine were among the topics discussed during Tuesday’s meeting on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Trump called Burnham a “natural businessman” and said the relationship between the two countries is stronger than it has been in the past.

Trump described the Chagos Islands agreement as a “bad deal” with regard to the military and strategically important region. Britain has said that under the agreement, the sovereignty of the islands will be handed over to Mauritius and the future of the US military base at Diego Garcia. The ratification process of the agreement has been stalled due to the lack of US support. Burnham said that the agreement will be implemented in cooperation with US partners.

Ahead of the meeting, Burnham said he would discuss with Trump ways to end the US-Iran conflict. He announced limited military aid to Saudi Arabia to stop the Houthi offensive and said British aircraft would refuel Saudi fighter jets. He also said he would ask for increased U.S. support for providing air defense missiles to Ukraine.

In his address to the General Assembly, Burnham said that global standards and oversight are needed to control the risks posed by artificial intelligence and misinformation. He said the UK would work with other countries to create rules on transparency and access to AI. Trump, on the other hand, said the US would reject efforts to create a global plan for AI regulation.
