Chitwan. A rhino has been swept away in the Narayani River from Chitwan National Park and buffer zone.

A five-year-old rhino was spotted at Susta Rural Municipality-4 this morning. National Park Information Officer Avinash Thapa Magar said that the rhino has been swept away and the rhino has reached Susta. He said, “The reiki of the rhino is being done. We are preparing to rescue it.” The rhino has to be darted and brought unconscious by boat or through the Indian route. Susta is located in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat-Susta West). To reach there, one has to use the Indian road.

It is said that the rhinos were swept away by the river when the Narayani River flooded on Saturday and Sunday. It is believed that the river might have swept away other rhinos and other wild animals to India. Earlier, on August 12, 2017, when the Rapti and Narayani rivers flooded, many rhinos had swept away and reached the Indian land. According to the then Chief Conservation Officer of the National Park, Joint Secretary Dr. Ram Chandra Kandel, 12 rhinos were rescued and brought back from the Indian territory.

He said that due to old acquaintance with the officials of India’s Balmiki Tiger Reserve, India has facilitated the work of bringing rhinos. It is estimated that the rhinos may have reached India as the floods this year are big.

According to the park, the rhinos that were swept away by the floods of the Rapti River on Saturday and Sunday this year have swept away in Meghauli, Khairahani and other areas. One deer was rescued from Shisuwar of Bharatpur Metropolitan City-17. According to the latest census, there are 694 rhinos in Chitwan National Park.
