Chitwan. The flood in the Narayani River has damaged a 1,150-meter embankment built on the river bank towards Chitwan.
Out of the 35 km stretch from the Narayani River bridge to Golaghat in the west, 20 km has been constructed. Out of this, 150 meters of the embankment has been affected by the flood.
According to Sagar Poudel, information officer of the Irrigation and Water Resources Project, Bharatpur, the flood has affected the embankment at the rate of 600 meters in Siddhiganesh forest area, 300 meters in Majhuwa forest area, 100 meters in Hirapur area and 50 meters in Gaureswor, Ganjipur and Katero areas. The embankment has been damaged and inundated.
He said that there were many embankments in the western part of the Narayani bridge towards Chitwan, so the current rains have not caused any major damage. He said that even though the flood entered the settlements from some places that were yet to be constructed, no damage was done. He said that the flood caused major damage in the area where the embankment on the Nawaparasi side has not been constructed. The flood has caused damages in three kilometers of the Amaltari area and two kilometers in the Nandapur, Sitapur and Seri areas of the Nawalparasi side.
Similarly, 15 kilometers of land in Parsauni, Tamaspur and Baguwan, 500 meters from Khotesimal to Brahmasthan, 700 meters in Pithauji, Nauneghat and Ghosarghat areas and 1 km 500 meters in Susta area have been damaged by floods. The damage has been caused due to less embankment work in these areas. Only minor damage has been done in the embankment areas.
According to him, the embankment has been constructed in an area of only nine kilometers in the Nawalparasi area. In the Nawalparasi area, an area of 98 kilometers below the Narayani bridge is located.
He said that the floods have caused erosion in the areas where the embankment has not been constructed. Due to the embankment, the damage has been reduced in the Chitwan side and the damage has been more due to the lack of work in the Nawalparasi side.
