Kathmandu. Minister for Foreign Affairs. Arju Rana Deuba has urged the international community to support sustainable agricultural systems for landlocked countries like Nepal and Nepal and climate finance for the mountainous region.

Addressing the 44th General Assembly of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome on Monday, she called for ensuring grant-based international climate finance for Nepal, which is facing the brunt of climate change, and its especially the Himalayan region.

Minister Rana said, “The mountainous regions of the country like Nepal and Nepal are the most affected due to the climate crisis. However, these areas have been neglected in climate finance and adaptation efforts. It is important for everyone concerned to pay attention to this issue. ’

Stating that agriculture sector is the backbone of nepal’s economy, Minister Rana said agriculture contributes 23 per cent of nepal’s GDP and nearly two-thirds of the population is dependent on agriculture. He also made it clear that the role of agriculture is important from food security to nutrition, poverty alleviation and rural development.

Minister Rana said that the goal of creating a hunger-free world by 2030 is still incomplete and the epidemic, climate crisis, economic instability and geopolitical tensions are also attacking the Sustainable Development Goals( SDGs).

He said that sustainable and tolerant hill agriculture promotion is essential and it is important not only for our livelihood, but also for ensuring biodiversity, food security and ecological balance of the earth.

Stating that Nepal is keen to expand successful and innovative agricultural practices with a ‘four better’ approach, he said, “We are looking for collaboration to expand farmers’ access to early warning system.” ’

In the context of increasing climate risk, we hope that cooperation with FAO will be strengthened for the promotion of sustainable hilly agriculture. In addition, Nepal expects a sharing of experience and knowledge on successful practices to increase the participation and leadership of women and young farmers. ’
