Washington. Us President Donald Trump has threatened to increase tariffs on goods imported from Japan to 30 to 35 percent.
President Trump has said that a trade deal with Japan is impossible before the July 9 deadline and that he is currently considering the possibility of raising tariffs.
“I don’t believe we will make a deal before July 9,” He told reporters aboard Air Force One, criticising Japan’s reluctance to accept imports of U.S. rice and the imbalance in vehicle trade between the two countries. ’
“I have doubts about Japan, they are very difficult,” he said of the possibility of a deal. ’
Trump, who has unveiled high rates against dozens of countries, has repeatedly agreed to postpone other tariff hikes, saying in April that he would impose higher tariffs on most countries by imposing 10 percent tariffs on imports from most trading partners to give space for negotiations.
The break expires on July 9, meaning that if countries fail to reach a deal with Washington, higher rates will start next week.
So far, only two agreements have been signed, including a comprehensive framework with Britain and an agreement with China to temporarily reduce tariffs.
Trump said he was writing a letter asking Japan to pay 30 percent to 35 percent or whatever number we set due to the “huge trade deficit” with Japan.
“This is unfair to the American people,” he said. Japan, a major U.S. ally and its largest investor, is subject to the same 10 percent basic tariffs imposed in most countries and stricter taxes on cars, steel and aluminum.
Tokyo’s trade envoy, Ryoshi Akazawa, told Japanese reporters in Washington last month that some progress had been made in the fifth round of talks with the United States.
“We haven’t been able to find a point of agreement yet. ’
