Birgunj. A portion of the clock tower here has been renovated after seven months. The balcony structure of the bell tower that collapsed on February 19 had weakened and the bricks had fallen.

Birgunj Metropolitan City (KMC) has restored the damaged structure of the clock tower to its original condition after repairing and painting it. Chief of Birgunj Metropolitan City Land Management and Urban Development Division, Prabhat Jha, said that the veil has also been removed after the renovation of the clock tower of Birgunj. “The structure of the clock tower could not be repaired using machines,” he said. As it is a historical monument, it has taken some time to repair it manually. Now almost all the structures of the clock tower have been completed. ’

Jha said that the construction net has been carried out keeping in mind the safety of the vehicles and passengers as there is heavy traffic in the vicinity of the Ghantaghar. “We have removed the scaffolding and construction mesh installed around the clock tower,” he said, adding, “We are confident that the clock tower will last for at least 10 years after the renovation.” However, the structures inside the clock tower are getting older. ’

Jha said that the construction of the clock tower is estimated to cost less than Rs 20 lakh. “The bill has not been prepared yet”, he said, “We are hopeful that it will be less than the estimated cost”. Mahashakti Construction was awarded the contract to construct the clock tower. Clock tower has been the main attraction of domestic and foreign tourists coming to Birgunj.

Jha said that the sun has damaged the balcony of the clock tower due to lack of proper drainage of rainwater. “It has taken some more time as the maintenance of the clock tower has to be carried out on the upper balcony,” he said, adding, “We have already brought the clock tower back to its old structure.” ’

It is said that the clock tower of Birgunj was completed on February 8, 1979. At that time, the students of Yonago, Japan, had to pay for a day’s lunch and arrange for the necessary budget to keep the clock tower and the clock there, according to the local senior citizens.
