KATHMANDU: Nepal has been knocked out of the men’s cricket tournament under the ongoing Asian Games in Japan after the match against Sri Lanka was abandoned due to rain.

The match between Nepal and Sri Lanka scheduled for today at the Korogi Sports Park ground in Nagoya could not start due to rain. According to the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), the match was canceled after the toss could not take place due to incessant rain. With this, Nepal’s dream of reaching the semi-finals remains incomplete this time as well.

If the match is not conducted according to the rules of the tournament, the team in the top position of the Twenty20 International ranking will be considered the winner and will be eliminated from the next round. According to the same provision, Nepal was eliminated from the tournament when Sri Lanka entered the semi-finals. In the current Twenty20 world rankings, Sri Lanka is in the ninth position and Nepal is in the 14th position.

It has been raining continuously in Nagoya since Saturday. The rain also affected the group stage match between Nepal and Japan on Saturday.

In the first match of the group stage, Nepal had defeated Afghanistan by five wickets. In the last match of the group stage, Nepal had to share points with Japan.
