Renewable energy will be mainstreamed: Minister Ghising

Kathmandu. Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Kulman Ghising has said that the government was ready to remove the 10 percent provision in the energy mix immediately. Minister Ghising said this during a meeting with the representatives of Confederation of Renewable Energy of Nepal (RICON), an umbrella organization of the private sector active in the micro hydropower, biogas, biomass, solar energy and wind energy.

Minister Ghising said he was fully committed to building a sustainable, inclusive and resilient renewable energy system.TAG_OPEN_div_22 He said that the renewable energy would be mainstreamed in the energy development of the country as the renewable energy technology would help Nepal in achieving the target of net-zero emission by 2045.

The memorandum submitted to Energy Minister Ghising has demanded speedy implementation of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Act, 2080 and effective representation of private sector in Energy Regulatory Commission.TAG_OPEN_div_20  The committee has also suggested fully institutionalizing net-metering, decentralized generation, micro hydropower and rooftop solar in the national energy policy, extending AAA model to these energy projects and creating employment opportunities for the Genji generation at the local level.

Green finance and investment, mitigation of investment risk by expanding carbon market mechanisms, tax exemption on renewable energy technology, concession of customs and concessional interest rates, availability of subsidized electricity to renewable energy industries including bio-energy producing industries, connection of micro hydropower projects to the national transmission line and collaboration with universities and international partners have been stressed.TAG_OPEN_div_18 ।

Similarly, TAG_OPEN_div_16 the committee calls for providing incentives to increase the share of renewables in the energy mix to 25 per cent and for creating employment opportunities for Genji generation in the country by setting up renewable energy parts/equipment/assembly industry in Nepal under the ‘Made in Nepal-Make in Nepal’ initiative.

Minister TAG_OPEN_div_14 Ghising was also positive about ensuring people÷participation in employment, ownership and entrepreneurship of women, youth, Genji and marginalized communities in employment, ownership and entrepreneurship, assessing the energy needs at the province÷local level, conducting management and financial capacity development programs, ensuring people’s participation in production, transmission and distribution, and linking energy access with small industries and entrepreneurship, said RICON Chairman Kushal Gurung ।

Also present on the occasion were former president of RECON Gunaraj Dhakal and representatives of private sector related organizations related to micro hydropower, biogas, biomass, solar energy and wind energy technology.TAG_OPEN_div_12
