Demonetisation in Nepal will cause more damage than Genji movement: Thapa

Kathmandu. Economist Nar Bahadur Thapa has said that demonetization is not relevant in Nepal’s context.

This was stated by the Nepal-India World Development Forum (WDF) at an interaction program on ‘Need and Justification of Demonetisation in Nepal’. He said that if demonetisation takes place in Nepal, it will cause more damage than the recent Zenji movement.

“The Genji movement defeated the state,” he said. If demonetisation takes place, the situation will be even worse. Demonetisation will not solve the problem. If that happens, the situation will be even more dire. ’

He argued that the country should have a strong government for demonetization, adding that a strong government and its bodies should also be strong.

He said demonetisation was not appropriate when the state was failing and the government was also not strong. He said that there is a fear that demonetization will backfire in Nepal if a strong government and its agencies are not strong.

Advocate of the Supreme Court, Dr. Jayamangal Prasad Jaiswal said that the debate on demonetisation in Nepal is positive. He said that there should be a thorough investigation on demonetisation.
