Kathmandu. Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has urged people not to dispose of household garbage. Issuing a notice on Friday, the KMC requested the landfill site to safely store the waste inside the household compound as there was a problem in disposing the waste at the landfill site.

Locals of Bancharedanda and Sisdol have also demanded declaring the landfill site, declaring the landfill site as a special sensitive zone, converting the affected area into a green area free of human settlement and prohibiting the disposal of hospital-based, pesticide-based and industrial waste.

Trucks carrying garbage from Kathmandu have not been able to reach the landfill site for the past three days. The Bancharedanda Landfill Site Affected Area Concern Committee has not allowed disposal of the waste citing various demands.

Committee coordinator Shreeram Dhungana said that they have not given permission to the waste disposal. “For the past three days, we have not allowed the garbage to be brought here,” he said, adding, “The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has always given assurances but has not shown any interest in fulfilling our demands.” That’s why we stopped throwing garbage. ’

According to Dhungana, the Chief District Officer of Nuwakot has also sent a letter to the landfill site requesting for facilitation. “Now, no matter who writes to us, the landfill site will be blocked indefinitely until our demands and previous agreements are implemented,” he said.
