137th International Workers’ Day being observed today

.  The 137th International Workers’ Day is being observed across the globe today by organizing various programs commemorating the workers’ movement that began in 1886 with the slogan ‘Eight hours work, eight hours for entertainment, eight hours for rest’.

The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security has organized several programmes across the country on the occasion of the World Labour, Employment and Social Security Day with the participation of employers, workers and representatives of various international organizations.TAG_OPEN_div_63

International Workers’ Day has been celebrated on May 1 every year since 1890 as per the decision of the Conference of World Labour Organizations and Labor Leaders held in Paris, France in 1889.TAG_OPEN_div_61

Taking this day as a festival, the workers have been organizing various programs with the objective of exerting pressure on the government and employers to ensure their rights.TAG_OPEN_div_59

The International TAG_OPEN_div_57 Workers’ Day has been celebrated in Nepal with the Biratnagar Workers’ Movement in 2007 BS. Following the political change in 2046 BS, the government has started declaring a public holiday on the International Workers’ Day.

Since the 60’s in Nepal, the day has been celebrated by organizing various programs.TAG_OPEN_div_55 The programme will discuss and debate on the current status of workers in Nepal, major policy initiatives brought for the welfare of workers, minimum wages, living standard of workers, strategy to bring workers in informal sector, employment generation programmes in the country and long-term plans targeted to youth.

Chief of the Labour Relations and Social Protection Division at the Ministry, Prem Prasad Acharya, said that a big progress has been made in the implementation of the labour laws and protection and promotion of workers’ rights.TAG_OPEN_div_49

“Efforts are on to implement the provisions in the Labour Act-2074 BS and Labour Regulations-2075 BS”, he said.TAG_OPEN_div_47 The process of amending the Act is moving ahead on the basis of suggestions from the stakeholders. In order to make the internal labour market systematic and dignified, the process of taking action against the violation of the law is moving forward. ”

Nepal is one of the countries sending the largest number of workers to the world market. A large part of the country’s economy is remitted by Nepalis who are in foreign employment.

The government has a long-term vision to strengthen the national economy and contribute to poverty alleviation by providing a safe, dignified and healthy working environment by producing competitive, skilled and skilled human resources in domestic and foreign labour market and creating employment and self-employment opportunities.TAG_OPEN_div_43
