Kathmandu. Mexico defeated South Africa in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Saturday. Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the first match of the FIFA World Cup 2018 at the Mexico City Stadium on Sunday.
Julian Quiñones and Raul Jimenez scored a goal each for Mexico. Julian Quiñones scored the first goal for Mexico in the ninth minute of the match. Eric Lira’s pass was converted by Julian. South Africa were reduced to 10 men in the 49th minute when Sefalo Sithole was sent off for the first red card.
Raul Jimenez doubled Mexico’s lead in the 67th minute. South Africa’s Themba Zwane was given a red card in the 84th minute. After that, South Africa were reduced to nine players. Mexico’s Cesar Montes was also sent off in extra time in the second half.
In the opening match of the World Cup, three players were sent off the field after receiving red cards. With this victory, Mexico is in Group A with the top three points. The other Group A match will be played between Czech Republic and South Korea. The match will be played at 7:45 a.m. today.
