Tea factories and plantations to be closed for an indefinite period

Cover. KATHMANDU: Tea industrialists in Nepal have decided to shut down their tea factories and estates for an indefinite period from tomorrow, saying the Nepali tea industry is facing a serious crisis.

The tea industrialists here have taken this step after Nepali tea could not be exported to India due to the ‘Standard Operating Procedure’ (SOP) implemented by the Tea Board of India.TAG_OPEN_div_10

According to Shukra Dahal, general secretary of Nepal Tea Producers’ Association, around TAG_OPEN_div_8 Rs 12 billion to 14 billion is traded annually of which tea worth Rs 5 billion is exported to India.

The Nepal Tea Producers Association, Jhapa, has announced to shut down the tea industry and tea estates from tomorrow.TAG_OPEN_div_6 Parajuli urged the government to take initiatives to export tea to Bangladesh, Pakistan and other third countries as an alternative. The tea sector employs around 60,000 workers and has been paying Rs 1 billion in revenue annually.
