Powerful earthquake kills 32 in Venezuela

Kathmandu. Two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, causing widespread damage in several parts of the country. Several cities, including the capital Caracas, have seen buildings shake, some structures collapsed and thousands of people forced to evacuate their homes. Authorities have declared a state of emergency and intensified rescue and relief operations.

In an address to the nation, Acting President Delcy Rodriguez said many states were affected. At least 32 people were killed and 700 injured, according to acting President Delcy Rodriguez. He said the death toll might rise further as rescue and search operations were underway.

According to acting President Rodriguez, the state of La Guaira was the worst affected. He said the region was facing a “serious humanitarian crisis”.

He said many buildings were destroyed and security and emergency teams were continuing to work together to rescue people trapped in the rubble.

Rodriguez described La Guaira as a disaster-hit area and said saving lives was a top priority for the government. He said rescuers were working hard to save lives in difficult circumstances.

The government has intensified relief and treatment services in the affected areas while collecting details of the damage is underway.
