Neymar bids farewell to international football

Kathmandu. Neymar signalled the end of his international career after Brazil crashed out of the tournament after losing 2-1 to Norway in the last 16 of the World Cup.

After the match, he appeared emotional and indicated that his journey with the Brazilian national team has come to an end.

The 34-year-old Neymar, who came on as a second-half substitute at MetLife Stadium, scored a penalty in stoppage time. But Norway’s Erling Haaland scored two goals to make Brazil’s comeback possible.

“I tried a lot,” Neymar told Brazil’s Globo Esporte after the game. Now it’s over. My journey started here and ended here. As the final whistle blew, he broke down in tears and was comforted by his teammates.

Neymar, Brazil’s top scorer, scored his first goal for the national team in a 2–0 win over the United States at the same MetLife Stadium in 2010. It is a special coincidence for him to play his last international match at the same ground.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player, who has been plagued by injury over the past few years, is now playing for his old club Santos.

He missed the first two group matches of the World Cup due to injury. He then returned to the field in a match against Scotland and made his second and possibly final appearance in the tournament against Norway. It was also his first international comeback since October 2023.
