Shukla Purnima: Guru Purnima and Vyasa Jayanti being celebrated

. KATHMANDU: The Guru Purnima festival is being celebrated today on the occasion of the Ashadh Shukla Purnima, the full moon day in the Nepali month of Ashadh as per the lunar calendar.

‘Gu’ means darkness and ‘ru’ means light. It is said in the books of Tantra and Dharmashastra that the person who destroys the darkness of ignorance with the light of knowledge is called Guru.

A person who dispels darkness and spreads light in life is called a guru. Our scriptures also consider such gurus as Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar. That is why it is said in various texts –

Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Gurudevo Maheshwara.

The teacher is directly the supreme Brahman, salutations to that teacher.

Like the parents, the Guru is also considered as a deity and is called ‘Acharyadevo Bhava’.

On the occasion of Guru Purnima, various schools and organizations organize programs to pay homage to the teachers who impart education and initiation.TAG_OPEN_div_37
