Bhotekoshi floods: 324 foreign nationals rescued, 590 out of contact from 39 countries

Kathmandu. Among the people affected by the Bhotekoshi floods last Wednesday, 324 people from different countries have been rescued and 590 people from 39 countries are still missing. According to the latest information, more than 1,000 bodies have been found, according to the government.

More than TAG_OPEN_div_26 11,800 people have been rescued so far, according to a press conference organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today. The ministry’s emergency control room is coordinating closely with the concerned agencies, Nepali diplomatic missions and the families of the incommunicado foreign nationals, said the ministry’s spokesperson, Lok Bahadur Poudel Chhetri.

Similarly, Nepali missions abroad are also facilitating the exchange of verified information, contact with the family and identification as per the need, and the process of repatriation of the dead bodies. “We are in close contact with the concerned countries and are committed to providing all necessary consular assistance,” said spokesperson Chhetri.TAG_OPEN_div_24

According to him, the concerned agencies of the government and security forces are continuing the search and rescue operation with the international assistance of the Government of Nepal in specific areas. “Special tunnel rescue teams comprising 24 people from India and nine from China have been deployed in the affected hydropower projects,” he said, adding that a team from the Republic of Korea has also arrived here.TAG_OPEN_div_22 ”

Indian tunnel rescue teams are working in close coordination with the Nepal Army at the Chilime and Langtang hydropower project sites. The Chinese team is working in coordination with the Nepal Army at the Upper Trishuli-3 ‘A’ project site. Nepal has already received the necessary equipment for the management and preservation of the bodies of the deceased.

Chhetri said, “A 19-member forensic team from India specializing in DNA analysis has been working continuously with the concerned Nepali authorities since August 29. A four-member forensic team from China is arriving this evening.” He also said that coordination is underway to mobilize a disaster victim identification team from Singapore.TAG_OPEN_div_18

According to Chhetri, the ministry has requested to provide ‘Lider’, ‘Bailey Bridge’, ‘Freezer’, DNA testing kits, ‘load carriers’, bags to store human remains, high-capacity drones, gene sequencers and other materials. The Government of Nepal is firmly focused on saving the lives of the citizens, searching for the missing persons, assisting the survivors and providing relief to the affected communities.TAG_OPEN_div_16

More than 21,000 personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force (APF) are currently mobilized in search, rescue, relocation and relief operations in the affected areas. The ministry has also stated that it is continuously working in close coordination with neighbouring countries and the international community to identify and mobilize specialized skills, equipment and resources required for the ongoing rescue and relief operations.TAG_OPEN_div_14
