KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress lawmaker Narendra Kumar Kerung has urged the government to make public the reports of various investigation and study committees formed by the government.

Speaking in the special hour of the House of Representatives today, lawmaker Kerung said the culture of forming a probe committee or commission following a serious incident in Nepal and then submitting the report in the drawer has not ended yet.

“If there is a serious incident, the people raise questions, the pressure on the streets increases, the government forms a commission and a committee, then a report is made, and then the report is kept in the drawer. The aggrieved people wait for justice for the rest of their lives,” he said.

Lawmaker Kerung said that the incumbent government has also formed 10 commissions and committees to investigate various issues and some reports are yet to be received, some have not been implemented even after understanding and some have not been made public. He demanded that the report of a three-member committee formed under the leadership of former justice Achyut Prasad Bhandari to investigate the properties of the Home Minister, share investment and relations with controversial businessmen should be made public.

Lawmaker Kerung said that since the Ministry of Home Affairs is a sensitive ministry related to peace and security and crime investigation, it is necessary to conduct an impartial investigation into the questions raised against the person leading it and make its basis public. He also asked the government about the status of the report prepared by the committee led by Prem Raj Karki on the role of security agencies during the Genji agitation.

He also said that the parliament should be informed whether the recommendations mentioned in the report of the committee formed to study the incidents related to gold smuggling have been implemented or not. Lawmaker Kerung also demanded that the debate paper on constitution amendment be brought to the public discussion.

Saying the report on the Jenji movement has only recommended action against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, he demanded investigation into the alleged infiltration of the then security officials, other political characters and the movement.

Accusing the government of seeking accountability only on the issues in its favour, Kerung termed the tendency of not making the reports public as ‘selective accountability’.
