Work should be done on potential risk mitigation rather than seeking compensation after destruction: Acting Chief Dangol

{{TAG_OPEN_div_28}Kathmandu. Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Sunita Dangol, has said that instead of seeking compensation for the damage caused by disasters and climate change, it should focus on risk reduction and invest in preparedness and infrastructure.

In a message of best wishes on the occasion of the Gharpajhong Climate Change Conference, 2083 organized by the Gharpajhong Rural Municipality on September 13 and 16 with the participation of the Government of Nepal, provincial government, local government, support agencies and experts, Dangol stressed the need to adopt scientific measures to mitigate the negative impact of climate change.TAG_OPEN_div_26

She said that due to climate change, there has been a drastic change in the lifestyle of nature, animals and plant systems as well as in the lifestyle of people. She said that disasters, diseases, natural imbalances, unexpected increase in temperature and changes in biodiversity and habitat have created concern about the future of the world.

While discussing the effects of climate change, Dangol said that instead of compensating for the impact, the cause should be identified and investment should be increased in that direction. According to him, environmental justice should focus on distributive justice rather than remedial justice.

She stressed the need to increase investment in infrastructure to reduce the risk of disasters such as floods, landslides, soil erosion, inundation, drought, drought, heavy rain and epidemics in view of the loss of life and property caused by the recent Bhotekoshi floods.TAG_OPEN_div_20

Stating that mountains, hills, Terai, valleys and valleys of Nepal are all affected by climate change, Dangol said although the nature and causes of risk vary from place to place, no area is completely safe.TAG_OPEN_div_18

Expressing regret that she could not participate in the conference due to technical reasons, she expressed her best wishes for the success of the conference.TAG_OPEN_div_16

} Dangol expressed the hope that the conference would hold in-depth discussions focusing on various aspects of climate change and congratulated and thanked the Gharpajhong Rural Municipality for organizing the conference.
