KATHMANDU: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has drawn the attention of the world community saying that Nepal’s disasters have proved the risk of climate crisis.

Addressing the inaugural session of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Secretary-General Guterres said that the mountainous countries including Nepal have been the most affected by the increase in temperature due to climate change. He said that the world will face even bigger problems if the temperature increases and the melting of glaciers increases.

Secretary-General Guterres, during his visit to Nepal three years ago, warned the world community that glaciers are melting at a rapid pace. He made it clear that disasters like Nepal’s Bhotekoshi floods have turned climate-related problems into a reality.

“Three years ago, I had warned that the roof of the world was collapsing from the mountains of Nepal”, he said, adding, “Although those who took the warnings of that time to be exaggerated, the recent events have proved that the effects of climate change are beginning to appear sooner, more severe and on a wider scale than had been anticipated.” ”

Guterres made it clear that the risks of climate change are now a reality, not a matter of the future, and that countries that contribute to the least part of global carbon emissions are paying the price.

Pointing out the need for climate justice, he said that polluters should pay the price and countries at risk of climate disasters should get justice and necessary financial support as compensation.

“There is not enough money in the fund established to address the loss and damage caused by climate change. I call on developed countries to fulfill their commitments on climate finance,” Guterres said, “I call on the climate adaptation finance to triple and mobilize additional resources into the Loss and Damage Fund.” ”
