Fly Dubai case: Indian pilot Smit praised for extraordinary bravery

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised the Indian pilots and passengers for their role in preventing a possible major crash by taking control of the plane after the co-pilot attacked it during the flight.

The co-pilot of the FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv attacked another pilot, and the plane descended about 17,000 feet within a minute and had to make an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Of the 174 passengers on board, 166 were Israeli nationals, according to media reports. All passengers are safe, according to FlyDubai.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said that the co-pilot had tried to kill all the passengers by crashing the plane. He praised the passengers for helping to prevent a major disaster. He also said that the injured Indian pilot, Smit Mosquito, responded with extraordinary bravery and prevented a major crash on the plane.

The company that operates Tabuk Airport said the co-pilot was also injured during the landing. FlyDubai said it has suspended its flights to Israel as the incident is being investigated.

Passenger Miriam Shira Ohioan said the plane was “largely out of control” for some time. She said the co-pilot tried to kill the pilot and the passengers helped him take him under control. Another passenger, Almog Italian, said there was a lot of turmoil on the plane before a fight broke out near the cockpit and the front passengers helped bring the situation under control.TAG_OPEN_div_20

Defense Minister Israel Katz called it an “attempted jihadist terrorist attack.” Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar spoke with the UAE’s top diplomat, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and said they had agreed to cooperate against extremist elements.

The incident took place a few weeks before the Israeli elections in late October. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Netanyahu said there were “indications” that Israel’s enemies could attempt an attack before the elections.
