Nepal, Pacific Island Countries in the Forefront of Climate Crisis: Foreign Minister Khanal

Minister for Foreign Affairs Shishir Khanal has said that Nepal and the island countries of the Pacific region are at the forefront of the same ecological crisis due to the increasing impact of climate change.

} Addressing the high-level ‘Leaders’ Plenary’ as part of the ‘Pre-Cope Leaders’ Event’ held in Fiji today, he said that there is a deep interconnection between the mountains and the oceans. He said that Nepal located in the high Himalayan region and the small island countries in the Pacific region are facing similar challenges due to climate change, according to his secretariat.

Minister Khanal said the recent Himalayan tsunami caused by devastating glacial lakes, glaciers and rock break in Nepal of recent had caused a big human loss.TAG_OPEN_div_20

He said the melting of Himalayan glaciers would raise sea levels and increase climate-related risks, including more powerful cyclones in the Pacific. “The Himalayas and the oceans are a continuation of the inseparable parts of the same planet, linked by a shared water cycle and a shared future for humanity,” he said.TAG_OPEN_div_18

Foreign Minister Khanal also drew attention to the climate injustice faced by the countries most affected by climate change. He said that weak and developing countries with negligible contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions are paying the disproportionate price of the climate crisis by losing human lives, critical infrastructure and development achievements.TAG_OPEN_div_16

“The situation of countries at risk of climate risk should be urgently addressed through global justice responsibility,” he said. Presenting Nepal’s priorities for the forthcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31), he stressed on the need of firm commitment to the goal of keeping the temperature rise within the limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius, predictable and grant-based adaptation finance without adding debt burden, early implementation of the Loss and Damage Fund and establishing a formal partnership between the countries based on the mountains and oceans.

He also stressed the need to further strengthen cooperation among Himalayan and island countries that are equally vulnerable to climate change. Recalling the cultural practices of community cooperation such as Fiji’s ‘Solesolewaki’ and Nepal’s ‘Shramdaan’, Minister Khanal stressed the need for global solidarity and unified leadership to tackle the climate crisis. He stressed the need for collective efforts to transform common risks into implementable climate justice in the journey to COP31.TAG_OPEN_div_12
