Kathmandu. Police have detained 278 members of former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, who are in jail following the imposition of emergency rule in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
According to two police officials, a state of emergency was declared in the province following anti-government protests on Sunday demanding Khan’s release. They said on condition of anonymity that party members have been detained since Sunday.
Khan’s supporters are demonstrating against the government, expressing dissatisfaction with the dire economic situation. Terrorist violence is also on the rise in the province as thousands of supporters are taking part in the march in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The security challenge has become serious, especially in the border areas with Afghanistan.
TAG_OPEN_div_18 The PTI reported that the provincial chief minister, Sohail Afridi, was arrested hours after the president announced an extraordinary constitutional measure. According to an administrative official, he was placed in “protective custody” at the official residence and later shifted to another location. The official refused to disclose where he was transferred.
