Kathmandu. On the fifth day of Navratri, Skandmata, the fifth of the nine Durgas, is worshiped in the Dashain house or puja room.

TAG_OPEN_div_30 Every year on Ashwin Shukla Panchami i.e. on the fifth day of Durga Paksha, Skandmata is worshiped methodically. The story of Skanda Mata is described in the Puranic texts. Once upon a time, when Shiva and Parvati went to the meeting of the sages, everyone got up and welcomed them. Sage Sanatkumar did not get up because he was engrossed in meditation. Parvati did not like this. Parvati cursed the sage saying, ‘You become a camel’. The sage became a camel. Shiva told Parvati, ‘No curse can touch the wise, so even in the camel’s womb, he is immersed in bliss with his Brahma form knowledge’, both the couples went to see the camel-wielding Sanatkumar.

When Parvati asked the sage how she felt in the camel’s womb, the sage replied, “You have given me a great favor by giving me the camel’s yoni”, “When I am hungry, I chew thorns of the forest and live happily in Brahman-contemplation and I do not experience any trouble in this vagina”.TAG_OPEN_div_28

} Parvati is impressed by the words of the sage and says, ‘Rishiji, you are a very great Brahmagyani, without understanding the importance here, I am very sorry for the curse given by me, now I want to get you as a son’. Skanda means Sanat Kumar. In the idol of Skandamata, it is said that she is sitting on a throne and holding a lotus flower with both hands.

TAG_OPEN_div_24 According to the Chandogya Shruti, Sanatkumara was named Skanda because she was born from the power of Bhagwati. Since she was the mother of Skanda, Parvati was called Skandamata.
