Kathmandu. The main highways of Nepal are going to be affected due to the impact of Cyclone ‘Arnab’, which developed in the Bay of Bengal.
The Flood Forecasting Division and Geological and Water-Induced Disaster Research Section under the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation issued preliminary landslide risk assessment and early warning on major highways regarding the possible impact of cyclone ‘Arnab’.
The notice states that the risk of landslides is likely to increase in the highway areas due to the possible impact of the cyclone ‘Arnab’, especially in the Narayani, Bagmati and Koshi river catchment areas of Nepal due to rainfall in and around the watershed of the river.
According to the notice, there is a possibility of landslides, landslides, landslides/falls, and road collapses on the highway sections with hilly and steep terrain. There is a possibility of flooding and erosion due to the rise in the water level of the river on the road sections along the river. There is a possibility of disruption of transport operations and transportation of essential commodities due to road blockage due to landslides and floods. There is a possibility of damage to the road due to increased water flow in small and big rivulets and culverts.
Similarly, major highway sections have been mentioned in the notice.
The Narayangadh-Muglin road section (along the Trishuli and Narayani rivers), the Koshi Highway and the Siddhartha Highway, the Kanti Highway, the Araniko Highway and other landslides along the Bagmati watershed area are at risk of being affected by the cyclone.
The Flood Forecasting Division and Geologic and Water Induced Disaster Research Section have appealed to the people not to travel on the highway during the rainy season except when absolutely essential and to travel only after taking information from the Traffic or Road Office.
