Kathmandu. As the date for the election of the House of Representatives is approaching, an election-friendly environment is being created across the country. The election atmosphere has become more heated with the start of election campaigning from today.

A total of 24 candidates including those who won the House of Representatives constituency no 5 in the federal capital of Kathmandu in the past and from the main rival candidates as well as new and independent candidates from different political parties have filed their candidacies. People who have served as deputy prime minister, minister, party chief, senior vice-chairperson, general secretary and others have filed their candidacies in this constituency.

In Kathmandu-5, CPN-UML senior leader Ishwar Pokharel, Nepali Congress General Secretary Pradip Poudel, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) former chair Kamal Thapa, Nepal Communist Party’s Kalpana Sharma and Rastriya Swatantra Party’s Sasmit Pokharel are in the fray.

Paudel of the Nepali Congress won the House of Representatives election held in 2079 BS with 15,269 votes. CPN-UML’s Pokharel garnered 10,190 votes. Dr Pranay Shumsher Rana of Rastriya Janata Party (RSP) got 5,477 votes while Ram Prasad Upreti of RPP got 3,162 votes.

Kaimuna Mijar, Dhak Bahadur Karki, Dharma Dangol, Prabha Shrestha and Ramita Sapkota are contesting as independent candidates.

In the last election, the RSP had bagged 11,647 votes, the NC 10,043, the UML 9,652, the RPP 7,201 and the CPN (Maoist Centre) 1,224.

A total of 65 political parties across the country are competing for 61 election symbols under first-past-the-post (first-past) election system for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 4. A total of 3,406 candidates are in the fray under the first-past-the-post category.

As many as 63 political parties are contesting under the proportional representation (PR) system for 57 election symbols. A total of 3,135 candidates, including 1,772 female and 1,363 male candidates, have been included in the closed list for the same. The Election Commission has enforced the election code of conduct from January 18.

A total of 1,8903,689 voters including 9,240,131 women, 9,663,358 male and 200 third parties are eligible to cast their ballots. A total of 23,112 polling stations have been set up at 10,967 polling stations across the country.
