‘Bird flu’ found

Jhapa. DAMAK: The transportation of chicken meat, eggs and related items has been banned in Damak municipality following confirmation of Avian Influenza cases.

The infection was confirmed in a laboratory test conducted after the chickens started dying at a layers poultry farm operating in ward no. 10 of Damak municipality. The municipality has said that the movement of chickens, eggs, chicks, feed and equipment from the affected areas has been completely restricted in view of the high risk of infection spreading. Non-essential entry into the farm area has also been banned and disinfectants have been mandatorily used at the entry and exit points.

Mayor Ram Kumar Thapa urged the public to adopt high alertness, saying all the necessary steps have been taken to control the infection. Livestock Development Officer in Damak Bipu Adhikari said preparation was underway to destroy the chickens of the farms concerned after the confirmation of the infection.

A technical team comprising experts will carry out an on-site monitoring on Monday and destroy the infected and suspected chickens as per the health protocol. There are around 25 poultry farms, big and small, in Damak municipality-10, said Rajendra Bhandari, ward chairperson of Damak municipality-10. The municipality has urged the public to immediately inform the poultry community if any unusual cases of falling ill or dying suddenly. It also urged people not to touch dead or sick chickens, pay attention to personal hygiene and take precautions while using poultry products.
