Kathmandu. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has urged one and all not to disseminate misleading information.

The Ministry said its serious attention was drawn towards baseless, false and misleading materials being disseminated through various online media and social sites of late.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry today, such fictitious information has been creating confusion among the general public and spreading wrong psychology in the society. “There is a risk that this will undermine trust in the information system and have a negative impact on the social balance,” the ministry said.

The Ministry has made it clear that it would take stern steps to control such activities, saying it was taking the act of disseminating misleading information very seriously. The Ministry has warned all the media, information providers and individuals not to disseminate news and information not verified by the authorised bodies. The Ministry has warned that if baseless, fake and misleading news is published or disseminated, the person or institution publishing such content will be identified and stern action will be taken as per the prevailing laws.

The ministry has also urged the general public not to indulge in any activities that could help spread misinformation. Social media users have been urged to check the authenticity and authenticity of any content before sharing it through their personal accounts.
