Campaign to remove encroached structures launched across the country

Kathmandu. A campaign has been launched to remove illegally constructed structures on government and public land across the country including the Kathmandu Valley. The government has started removing the encroached houses and structures in various risky areas of the Kathmandu Valley from Saturday in the first phase.
On Saturday, illegal structures were removed from the river banks in Thapathali, Sinamangal-Gairigaun and Shantinagar areas of Kathmandu. Similarly, the government team with the help of security agencies including Nepal Police and Armed Police Force Nepal is removing the encroached structures along the Manohara River bank.
Kathmandu TAG_OPEN_div_50 Valley Development Authority (KVDA) Development Commissioner Januka Dhakal said that the settlements in vulnerable areas would be removed in the initial phase and the landless would be identified and the settlements would be managed properly. The NRA has said that preliminary details of the people who have become homeless in the course of vacating the encroached land will be collected and arrangements have been made for their settlement.
The risky settlements at Gothatar Buddha Chowk in Kageshwori Manohara Municipality-8 and Manohara Tole of Ward No. 9 of Kathmandu have been evacuated. The security personnel are assisting in the evacuation and transportation of the belongings of the people before demolishing the physical structures in the settlement.
So far, 214 families have come in contact with the government while vacating the encroached settlements, according to the NRA. Those who have come in contact have been provided accommodation and food in various hotels for the time being.TAG_OPEN_div_46
Under the
campaign, illegal structures constructed in various places of the country including Rupandehi, Nuwakot, Parsa and other places of the country have started to be removed. The houses and huts constructed by encroaching on government land at Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City-4 in Rupandehi district have been removed today. The Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City had issued a notice on Saturday itself, urging the authorities to remove the structures built on government land.
The Galchhi-Rasuwagadhi Road Project Office has removed a dozen government and 86 private structures constructed by encroaching on government land in different places of Bidur Municipality in Nuwakot district today.TAG_OPEN_div_42
Similarly, the Narayani Irrigation and Management Office today removed the houses, huts and other structures constructed by encroaching on the Gandak canal in Parsa. Sunil Kumar Karna, chief of the administration and management division of Birgunj Metropolitan City, said that the illegal structures were removed in coordination with Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and other security agencies.TAG_OPEN_div_40
Inspector General of Police inspects Manohara area
TAG_OPEN_div_36 Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki has inspected the evacuation of the encroached settlements on the banks of the Manohara River. During the meeting, he inquired about the proper management of the landless people and the relocation of them to safer places, according to the Police Headquarters.
There was a minor clash with the police on the banks of the Manohara river on Saturday while removing the settlement. During this, 22 security personnel were injured in the attack by the locals. Today, till the time of filing this news, the process of evacuating the settlement is going on peacefully.

The Human Rights Alliance has said that it is not right from the point of view of human rights and human rights to remove squatters and landless people without alternative arrangements. A statement issued by the organization’s president Bidur Subedi said that the fear, insecurity and uncertainty seen in the families of the displaced from the settlement will weaken the trust between the state and the citizens.
The Alliance has urged the affected communities not to forcibly displace them by initiating an open, trusting, and meaningful dialogue.
