Kathmandu. Nepal Automobile Importers and Manufacturers Association (Naima) has called for a clear, practical and uniform provision regarding EV motor capacity testing, certification and technical evaluation.

“Our attention has been drawn to the comments, discussions and interpretations being carried out through various media regarding the motor capacity of electric vehicles (EVs),” said Naima.

Earlier, during the discussion on the motor capacity of EVs with the Finance Minister, the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, and the Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, it was of the view that there was a need for a clear, practical and uniform arrangement regarding the test, certification and technical evaluation of EV motor capacity.

The electric vehicles imported into Nepal are being imported on the basis of official technical details, test reports and certification process issued by internationally recognized manufacturing companies.

“It is a common international practice in the global automobile industry to produce vehicles of the same model with different technical specifications as per different countries, regulatory frameworks and market requirements. “Therefore, drawing conclusions about motor capacity based solely on the description of the website, model name or external information is not a technically credible basis,” the company said in a statement.

According to the company, the ambiguity has not been fully implemented in Nepal due to lack of clear national technical standards, institutional testing system and integrated working procedures for testing and certification related to EV vehicles.

“The technical evaluation of EV vehicles should be based on the certified details issued by the authorized manufacturing company, the certification of the internationally recognized testing agency, and the established technical standards,” it said. ’

Electric vehicles are becoming an important means to promote clean energy usage, sustainable transportation system and green economy in Nepal.

The expansion of E.V. segment in the country is expected to increase the effective use of clean energy in the country, reduce environmental pollution, and contribute positively to the long-term sustainability of the overall energy and transportation sector.

According to Naima, the issues related to this sector which are directly related to the national priority should be evaluated on the basis of facts, technical study and international practice.
