Demand for compensation to people affected by heavy rains, storms and landslides

Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The meeting of the House of Representatives today drew the attention of the government towards the impact of heavy rains, storms and landslides affecting the citizens and roads in various districts in recent period.

In an emergency hour of the assembly, lawmaker Balawati Sharma drew the attention of the government to provide appropriate compensation and relief to the farmers as the storm has blown off the roofs of schools and houses in Baglung.

Lawmaker Som Sharma urged the government to be serious about disaster risk management. Lawmaker Sandip Rana gave an illustration of people dying after eating pesticide mushroom and called for developing a system to classify the pesticide mushroom as edible.

Lawmaker Govinda Panthi urged the government to provide relief and compensation after assessing Malika rural municipality of Gulmi which was most affected by the storm. Lawmaker Bhumika Limbu Subba drew the attention of the government towards the obstruction of some roads along the Mid-Hill (Pushpalal) Highway and the landslide affecting normal life in the eastern hilly districts.

Ashish Gajurel expressed concern over the increasing number of lives of children due to rain and flood at different places along the BP Highway and suggested the government to make the pre-awareness campaign effective in disaster management.

Lawmaker Narendra Kumar Kerung requested the concerned authorities concerned to assess the damage caused by unseasonal monsoon at various places including Falaicha (Dobhane) along the Mid-Hilly Highway.

Likewise, Kshitij Thebe demanded compensation to the people affected by the disasters in Taplejung and Panchthar districts due to heavy rainfall on May 22. Lawmaker Ram Binod Yadav expressed sorrow over the death of a pregnant woman while undergoing treatment in Dhanusha due to the carelessness of the health workers.

Lawmaker Sushanta Vaidik urged the government to pay attention to the immediate situation as the power supply has been disrupted in Pyuthan, Rolpa and Arghakhanchi districts for the past few days. Rekha Kumari Yadav expressed concern over the attempt to demolish 34 houses at Gaushala in Mahottari district against the Supreme Court’s verdict.

Shambhu Prasad Dhakal demanded relief for the loss of electricity and banana farming in Jhapa due to incessant rains.

Lawmaker Prem Bahadur Bayak said that around two hundred sheep had suffered loss at Ramaroshan in Achham due to the recent rain and landslide, urging the government to provide relief to the affected farmers.
