Govt urged to increase tax on tobacco products

.  KATHMANDU: More than 39,000 people lose their lives every year due to the use of tobacco products, lawmakers have suggested the government to increase tax on tobacco products in the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Stating that only 4 TAG_OPEN_div_124 0 per cent tax is levied on tobacco products in Nepal, they urged the government to impose at least 75 per cent tax on such products as recommended by the World Health Organisation. Lawmakers said that although Rs 33 billion revenue is collected annually from tobacco products, the burden of health and treatment is more than Rs 45 billion.

} They narrated the example of more than 8.5 million people suffering from tobacco products and 800,000 young students in the age group of 14 to 24 years were addicted to tobacco. The tax on tobacco products in India is 58 per cent while in Bangladesh it is 73 per cent.

Lawmaker Kusum Maharjan demanded a 100 per cent increase in tax on tobacco products from upcoming budget stating that over 39,000 people lose their lives every year.TAG_OPEN_div_120
