Kathmandu. Brazil has sought formal consultation with the World Trade Organization (WTO) on additional tariffs imposed by the United States on Brazilian products.

Brazil said the move was unfair and contrary to international trade rules.

Brazil’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Monday that on July 27, a formal request for consultations was made with the United States under the WTO’s dispute resolution mechanism. “The U.S. tariffs are inconsistent with international trade rules,” the ministry said.

The US administration this month imposed new tariffs on many Brazilian products in two phases. The US said it would impose tariffs of 25 per cent on alleged unfair trade practices and an additional 12.5 per cent on allegations of forced labour.

According to the WTO’s procedure, a request for consultation is the initial step before a dispute resolution panel is set up.

Brazil followed a similar process in 2025. At the time, the United States imposed 50 percent tariffs on Brazil over cases related to former President Jair Bolsonaro, which was largely withdrawn.

Political tensions are rising in Brazil ahead of October’s presidential election. Bolsonaro’s son Flavio Bolsonaro is facing leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

President Lula accused Flavio Bolsonaro of encouraging U.S. tariff pressure to gain political mileage in the election. But Flavio Bolsonaro has denied the allegations.

Meanwhile, according to diplomatic sources, Brazil has refused to issue visas to two US officials who wanted to meet with election officials in Brazil.
