Kathmandu. Three people have died and 558 people are still missing in floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Tibet on the China-Nepal border, according to Chinese state media. Among the missing, 260 are foreign nationals.

More than a thousand rescuers have continued their search and rescue operations after mud and debris fell on buildings in the border area on Wednesday morning. Search dogs and drones were used in the rescue. Surveillance video showed many people running for their lives.

Li Keipu, a member of China’s paramilitary People’s Armed Police, said rescue operations were difficult due to unstable terrain and narrow mountain roads. He said that although large vehicles and heavy equipment could not reach the main disaster site, the surrounding roads were open and necessary supplies were delivered.

According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, about 800 rescue workers and more than 150 vehicles have been deployed along the border. The fire service has deployed 431 personnel, including search dogs, human presence detection scanners and small boats. Civilian and military aircraft carrying relief materials have also reached Tibet.

Officials said that the risk of more landslides and landslides is high as it has been raining throughout the night. This can make the rescue operation more challenging.

The Tibet Autonomous Region has been a limited access area for foreign journalists. Foreign journalists are generally allowed to visit there only through visits organized by the Chinese government.
