KATHMANDU: The members of the National Assembly have stressed the need for united efforts to deal with the national disaster and stressed the need to put all the state strength in search, rescue, relief and rehabilitation of those affected by the devastating Bhotekoshi floods.

In the zero hour of today’s meeting of the Assembly held after the Bhotekoshi disaster, the lawmakers drew the attention of the government to modernize the early warning system, strictly implement early warning and build disaster resilient infrastructures.

Kamaladevi Pant of the Nepali Congress urged the government to take immediate action without ignoring the early warnings of disasters like floods and landslides. She suggested the government to use all its strength in the search and rescue of the missing people and to immediately relocate the people who are at risk to safer places.

Jayanti Devi Rai of the Communist Party of Nepal drew the attention of the government to provide immediate relief to the flood-affected people. Nar Bahadur Bista of the same party urged the government to pay attention to the relief distribution during the disaster as it could cause more pain to the affected people.

Narayan Dutta Mishra of the main opposition Nepali Congress suggested the government to immediately study about the risky glacial lakes located in the northern part of the country and prepare disaster-resilient infrastructures.

Madan Kumari Shah ‘Garima’ of the Communist Party of Nepal called for search, rescue, relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction in coordination with the federal, provincial and local governments during the national disaster. Yubaraj Sharma of the Nepali Congress said that the poor early warning system caused a big loss and drew the attention of the government to modernize the system.

Rajendra Laxmi Gaire of the Communist Party of Nepal drew the attention of the government to be more active in the early rescue of the people trapped in the tunnel of the hydropower project. Suresh Kumar Ale Magar of the same party said that the international community’s attention should be drawn to the climate justice as the Bhotekoshi disaster has been created due to climate change.

Similarly, Sonam Gyalzen Sherpa of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) underscored the need of entire unity of the nation to deal with the challenges of natural disasters and lauded the government’s efforts in providing relief to the flood-affected people.
