Rasuwa floods swept away 33 bridges, 53 suspension bridges damaged

Kathmandu. As many as 53 suspension bridges have been damaged by the floods in Rasuwa. Of them, 33 bridges have been completely damaged and need to be reconstructed, while 20 bridges with minor damage will be repaired immediately.

The government has taken immediate temporary measures to ease the movement of people in the situation when the movement between various settlements has been affected after the bridge was washed away due to the floods. According to the department, the work of installing temporary tuins has started at five places.

A 255-metre-long tuin at Indrayani Chaur of Trishuli River in Bidur Municipality-1 of Nuwakot district has come into operation from Monday. Similarly, a 180-metre-long tuin at Devighat will be brought into operation from today. The department’s director-general Sah said that the work of connecting tuins in three more places including two in Betrawati and Rasuwa will be started from tomorrow.TAG_OPEN_div_24

Out of the 20 bridges with minor damage, the repair work of nine bridges in the upper part of the Galchi will start from tomorrow. The department is preparing to expedite the work by purchasing the necessary decks from the market. The department has set a target to complete the work of bridges that can be repaired within the next 20 to 25 days and make the movement of locals easier.TAG_OPEN_div_22

However, it will take some time to reconstruct the 33 bridges that are completely damaged. Director General Sah said that the international tender process has to be forwarded as the steel wire rope required for the reconstruction is not in stock at present and it has to be imported from India.TAG_OPEN_div_20

He said that due to a technical problem in the system of the Public Procurement Monitoring Office (PPMO), the bidding process had to be started through hard copy. The department estimates that this may delay the reconstruction work for some time.TAG_OPEN_div_18

The department has also prepared a preliminary cost estimate for the restoration of the local infrastructure damaged by the floods. According to the preliminary estimate, Rs 15 crore will be required for the repair of the suspension bridge, Rs 60 crore for the reconstruction of the completely damaged suspension bridge, and Rs 40 crore for the opening of the blocked rural roads and the construction of alternative roads.TAG_OPEN_div_16

Director General Sah clarified that the Department has prioritized the rehabilitation work to maintain the movement and access to the local level although the damage has been comparatively less in comparison to the main national highways.TAG_OPEN_div_14
