Repair of roads underway in flood-hit areas

{{TAG_OPEN_div_16} Kathmandu. The government has started repairing the roads damaged by the floods. According to Dr. Bijay Jaisi, Director General of the Department of Roads, the Galchhi-Vetravati-Rasuwagadhi road and the Galchhi-Muglin section of the Prithvi Highway were damaged.

Of the 82 kilometres of the Galchhi-Vetravati-Rasuwagadhi road, 56 kilometres of the Bidur-Vetravati-Mailung-Syafrubesi-Rasuwagadhi section were completely destroyed.TAG_OPEN_div_14

Also, Krishnabhir and Parewabhir areas of the Prithvi Highway were damaged. 48 suspension bridges were damaged due to the floods. Of these, 20 can be constructed and 28 need to be reconstructed, he said. At present, the Galchhi, Baireni, Jarikhet, Pokhare, Munge, and Galaudi sections of the Prithvi Highway have been removed from the mud and vehicular movement has been resumed.

According to Suresh Poudel, Senior Divisional Engineer of the Department of Roads, the construction of a bailey bridge is underway by removing the silt on the Galchi-Devighat section of the Galchi-Vetravati road. He said that preparations are being made to install a bailey bridge at Tadi Devighat. The work has started in Vetrawati as well, if it is possible to install the bailey bridge that we have. At present, 50 technical employees are working for the construction and maintenance of the road.TAG_OPEN_div_10

The Roads Board has allocated Rs 25 million for emergency purposes. The rest of the necessary amount has been agreed to be spent from the budget allocated under the scheme. Details of the affected areas are being collected through helicopters and on foot. As many as 31 bridges have been washed away in the affected areas. At present, the process of installing bailey bridges in three of them has started and a feasibility study is underway to install bailey bridges at 20 more places. The Krishnabhir section of the flood-damaged Muglin-Narayangadh road will be repaired and brought into operation by August.TAG_OPEN_div_8
