TAG_OPEN_div_64 KATHMANDU: Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Khadak Raj Poudel has said that the Rasuwa floods have caused a loss of more than Rs 50 billion to the tourism sector.
During a meeting of the Committee on International Relations and Tourism under the House of Representatives held today on the impact of Rasuwa floods in the tourism sector, he said that the estimate was made based on the damage to tourism business and infrastructure and the economic impact in the future.TAG_OPEN_div_62
According to Minister Poudel, 142 hotels, 57 restaurants and 141 vehicles related to tourism business have been damaged in the floods and landslides. Various important religious and cultural heritages in the area have also been damaged.TAG_OPEN_div_60
He said that the situation has been created to search for alternative routes as Langtang, Gosainkunda, Parbatikunda and Nathali trekking routes have been damaged.TAG_OPEN_div_58
Stating that the Ministry has forwarded a plan to develop the affected areas as ‘Climate Heritage’, Minister Poudel said that a decision would be taken on the basis of consultation with the stakeholders regarding the construction of museums, monuments, parks and other structures in the affected areas.TAG_OPEN_div_56
Stating that Nepal was facing a big disaster due to climate change, Minister Poudel said that Nepalis have to bear the brunt of the mistakes Nepal has not made.TAG_OPEN_div_54

Minister Poudel pointed out the need of modern technology to provide information before the disaster strikes, keeping in mind the risks associated with glacial lakes and glaciers located in the mountainous region.TAG_OPEN_div_50

Stating that Nepali airlines and helicopter entrepreneurs have made significant contribution in the rescue and relief efforts in floods and landslides, he said this would be seen as a significant contribution to the nation.TAG_OPEN_div_46
Minister Poudel thanked the hoteliers of Pokhara, Chitwan and Kathmandu for making arrangements for providing free accommodation and food to the affected people. He said that the exact number of foreign tourists who have gone missing in the Rasuwa floods would be confirmed once the final data is released.TAG_OPEN_div_44
Stating that the government has forwarded the process to set up desks at Tribhuvan International Airport and other necessary places for facilitating the affected tourists and their families, Minister Poudel said that coordination was being made with various ministries and embassies in this regard.TAG_OPEN_div_42
Minister Poudel stressed the need for effective communication at the international level to avoid sending negative messages to Nepal’s tourism sector due to the disaster. He also suggested anyone with access to the international level to spread the message that Nepal is safe and Nepal’s tourism industry is ready to welcome tourists.TAG_OPEN_div_40
“Natural disasters can happen anywhere in the world. It cannot destroy Nepal’s tourism industry. We are still standing and ready to welcome tourists,” he said.

Stating that a decision has also been made to mobilize the welfare fund related to the workers working in the tourism sector, Finance Minister Khatiwada said coordination was being made with the Ministry of Finance regarding the complications that might come up in the insurance claim due to the uncertainty of the people disappeared in the floods.TAG_OPEN_div_34
