Ministerial decision to set up mortuary to accommodate at least 50 dead bodies in 12 federal hospitals

Kathmandu. The Ministry of Health and Food and Hygiene has decided to construct mortuaries with a capacity to accommodate at least 50 bodies in 12 federal hospitals and health science academies in the country so that they can manage a large number of dead bodies during disasters and mega disasters.
Health and Food and Hygiene Minister Nisha Mehta has said that such infrastructure is necessary in the hospital keeping in mind the difficulties seen in the management of dead bodies during the past disasters and the recent Bhotekoshi floods. He said that on the basis of disaster management lessons, an adequate mortuary should be constructed in the hospital to prevent such problems from happening in the future.TAG_OPEN_div_22
TAG_OPEN_div_20 Minister Mehta said that the importance of forensic medicine is increasing and it is necessary to expand the capacity of mortuary to make medico-legal work effective. This will help in the safe preservation, identification, examination and necessary legal process of the dead body, the ministry said.
} According to the ministry, the responsibility of dead body management during a disaster has to be borne by the concerned hospital in a systematic manner, so it is necessary to develop mortuary houses with the necessary capacity in hospitals. It has been decided to institutionalize the dead body management as it is seen as a significant challenge in the past disasters and even in the present disasters.
As per the decision, mortuary houses will be expanded in Koshi Hospital, Narayani Hospital, Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital, Bharatpur Hospital, Bheri Hospital and Dadeldhura Hospital.TAG_OPEN_div_16
Similarly, the capacity of National Academy of Medical Sciences, BP Koirala, Patan, Pokhara, Rapti and Karnali Academy of Health Sciences with the capacity to manage dead bodies of at least 50 dead bodies at a time will be constructed and the capacity will be expanded.TAG_OPEN_div_14
According to the Ministry, such infrastructures are being developed to make dead body management safe, systematic, dignified and scientific by strengthening disaster preparedness and response capacity and also to help expand forensic and medico-legal services.TAG_OPEN_div_12
