Kathmandu. It is estimated that Rs 95.42 billion will be spent to remove the stones, mud, sand and debris of the buildings piled up by the Bhotekoshi floods.

The ‘Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA) Report’ prepared by the National Planning Commission and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority states that the cost is estimated for immediate and long-term rehabilitation.

According to the report, the amount will be spent on the removal of structures of collapsed buildings under the ‘cross-cutting’ area, disaster risk reduction and inclusive rehabilitation. Structures worth Rs 48.24 billion have been damaged due to floods. There is a pile of mud worth about two billion rupees. It is estimated that more than Rs 30 crore will be spent to remove it.

Similarly, it is estimated that Rs 35 crore will be spent immediately for disaster risk reduction and Rs 944 crore for the long term. This will be spent on the removal of debris in the waterway, river management and settlement protection, command area development, erosion and landslide control along the high river banks, rehabilitation of irrigation system and multi-disaster early warning system.

The report shows that Rs 15 crore is needed immediately for inclusive rehabilitation, i.e. for six months. This amount will be spent on rehabilitation and reconstruction covering the needs of vulnerable and marginalized communities, women, children, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

The report states that 31.1 percent of the work of removing the debris, stones, soil and sand of the building can be completed within six months. The report also states that only 0.4 percent of the work can be completed under risk mitigation management. Inclusive rehabilitation and reconstruction is likely to be completed within this time.

For the immediate revival, Rs 67.42 billion will be spent on infrastructure. This includes hydropower and grid, domestic renewable energy, roads, bridges, communication, sanitation and drinking water, irrigation and rivers. It is estimated that Rs 8 TAG_OPEN_span_14.29 billion will be spent for the revival of the social sector. This will be spent on private housing, public buildings and facilities, education, health and cultural sectors.

It is estimated that Rs 5 billion will be spent for the immediate revival of the manufacturing sector. This amount will be spent on agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry, banking, economic activities and livelihoods. It is also estimated that Rs 6.60 billion will be required for the immediate removal of debris and disaster risk reduction for six months.
