Chairman of the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) Dr Gopal Prasad Bhatta has said that the capital market should not be limited to share trading but should be linked to the rural economy, productive sector and the economic life of the general public.
Speaking at the ‘Sambhava’ program inaugurated by Media International in Kathmandu, Chairman Bhatta stressed on the need of expanding the scope of capital market to link it with the economic development and production growth of the country. Stating that the general public understands the capital market mainly as the trading of shares, he stressed the need for widespread public awareness about its real purpose, potential and contribution to economic development.TAG_OPEN_div_20

According to Bhatta, when discussing the capital market in Nepal, most of the time the stock trading in the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), the fluctuations in the market index and the amount earned or lost by the investors are given priority. He said that the capital market will play an important role in mobilizing financial resources from individuals and institutions who want to invest to the areas where capital is needed. He said that capital can be raised through shares as well as bonds and other securities will help the industry, business and the government to get the necessary financial resources.TAG_OPEN_div_14
He stressed on the need to end the dependence of industrialists and entrepreneurs and the capital-dependent sectors only on the banking system and create an environment where they can directly raise resources through the capital market. He said that the effective expansion of the capital market would help increase investment in the productive sector and entrepreneurial activities within the country, thereby creating more opportunities for economic development.TAG_OPEN_div_12
