Chobhar substation to be charged after Dashain

Kathmandu. The construction of the 132÷11 KV Chovar substation, which is considered important to make the electricity supply system of Kathmandu Valley more strong, reliable and qualitative, has reached the final stage. One of the two power transformers of the substation under construction in Kirtipur Municipality-6 will be charged and brought into operation after Dashain. Two power transformers of 45 MVA capacity have been installed at Chobhar substation.

One circuit of Matatirtha under the Thankot-Chapagaun-Bhaktapur 132 kV double circuit transmission line has been charged so as to supply power to the substation.

As per the project, the substation is expected to be instrumental in streamlining the reliable and qualitative power supply of Kathmandu valley and especially in areas around Kirtipur and surrounding areas around Pulchowk of Lalitpur.

NEA’s managing director, Dirgha Yu Kumar Shrestha, Deputy Executive Director of Transmission Directorate Nawaraj Ojha, Chief of Distribution and Customer Service Directorate Rajan Dhakal and others took stock of the progress of substation in detail.

During the inspection, Executive Director Shrestha said that the transmission line supplying electricity to the substation has already been charged and the remaining works should be completed soon and the substation should be charged after Dashain. Stating that the Matatirtha-Chobhar transmission line and Chobhar substation will be important to manage the increasing demand of electricity in the Kathmandu Valley in the coming winter, he stressed on the need of bringing both structures into operation as soon as possible, giving high priority to both the structures.

Nine feeder lines of 11 kV each have been arranged for the distribution of electricity in the local areas from Chobhar substation. Out of these, three feeders will be extended towards Pulchowk of Lalitpur and six towards Kirtipur. The work of expanding the feeder line is in the final stage and after the completion of the work, the substation will be charged after Dashain.

The 132÷11 KV substation has been constructed at Chobhar as an alternative arrangement after the construction of the Thankot-Chapagaun-Bhaktapur 132 KV transmission line was obstructed in Khokana, Bungmati, Harisiddhi and Lamatar areas of Lalitpur. The construction of a 132 KV underground transmission line of about four and a half kilometers from Chobhar substation to Patan has also been taken forward with high priority. The construction of a 132 KV substation in Patan is also underway.

The substation was constructed on leased 12 ropani and 12 anna land owned by Himal Cement at Bhutkhel in Chovar. The meeting of the Council of Ministers on January 30, 2021 had decided to provide the land on lease to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for the construction of the substation.

The substation was constructed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s concessional loan under the Kathmandu Valley Transmission Capacity Improvement Project.
